This painting was completely improvisational, like almost all of my work. I quickly became aware that it was very likely going to end up as a figure with a "tribal" look to it. After creating it fully, I started to wander who she represented. I had the Cahuenga pop into my head, so I googled it... "Cahuenga (also, Cabeugna and Cabuenga) or "place of the hill" is a former Tongva and Tataviam (Fernandeño - Gabrieleño) Native American settlement in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California." Cool! That's where I'm from I thought...

As far as I can tell, there is no surviving imagery from these people. This actually looks more African or oceanic to me. So who can really guess where she came from?

This painting started with a piece of wet watercolor paper stretched over a piece of plywood and stapled on the back. I added the rest of the frame from scraps in the studio. I felt like I might just be having TOO much fun framing this...Maybe I did. And I think it works well! It's wired to hang.
